FAQs

Are Patagonia Wetsuits Worth it?

We believe Patagonia wetsuits are 100000% worth it because they have been moving away from traditional neoprene, which has a synthetic polymer content made from petroleum or limestone and has a high environmental footprint. Instead, Patagonia wetsuits are made from chlorine-free synthetic rubber and FCS-certified (Forest Stewardship Council) natural rubber harvested from Hevea trees, and are designed to be super durable and last longer than your standard neoprene wetsuit.

They use environmentally responsible practices and FSC-certified natural rubber, ensuring the neoprene in their wetsuits, called Yulex, comes from sustainably managed forests. The Rainforest Alliance helps certify that Patagonia’s natural rubber is responsibly sourced, supporting Patagonia’s mission to make wetsuits with a conscience. Patagonia practices fair trade and is fair trade certified, something that we believe should be present amongst all brands.

This is a massive step away from fast fashion and towards a future that puts our planet first. Their wetsuits are more sustainable, comfortable, and they will last you season after season without compromising durability, seams, thickness or seals. So if you are asking if Patagonia wetsuits are worth - Hell Yeah! Better deal for you; Better deal for the planet!

How thick is the Patagonia R4 Wetsuit?

The Patagonia R4 Yulex Full Wetsuit features the following neoprene‑free thickness design:

  • Torso and thighs: 5/5 mm
  • Arms and lower legs: 4/0 mm

This two-zone thickness configuration delivers core warmth and comfort while maintaining movement in the limbs — ideal for cold-water surf conditions and maybe a bit too warm for summertime. The Yulex material is a natural rubber that is super flexible and does not compromise on warmth, and has better seals for added heat retention than your standard wetsuit made from synthetic rubbers. (38–48°F / 3–9 °C).

How thick is the Patagonia R1 Wetsuit?

The Patagonia R1 Yulex Regulator wetsuit features a thickness layout of:

  • Torso and thighs: 3mm
  • Arms and lower legs: 2/5 mm

This 3 / 2.5 mm configuration offers a warmer, slightly more durable build compared to standard 3/2 wetsuits—especially in the limbs—while preserving good flexibility for surfing. It is ideal for UK summers and other tropical climates, as the Yulex material is significantly thinner and less restrictive than the R4 without compromising on zipper construction.

Additional details:

  • Constructed from 85% Yulex® natural rubber and 15% synthetic rubber, making it neoprene‑free and environmentally conscious.
  • Lined with recycled nylon for added comfort and stretchiness.
  • Suited for water temperatures of 60–65°F (16–18 °C), though many users find it effective in slightly colder conditions.

What is natural rubber?

Patagonia was the first wetsuit brand to switch from neoprene to natural rubber across its entire range of full wetsuits, resulting in a much higher natural rubber polymer content than other synthetic rubbers in their wetsuits. They use a specific natural rubber type called Yulex natural rubber, which:

  • Is FSC certified, meaning it’s sourced from responsibly managed plantations.
  • Offers the same stretch and performance as neoprene.
  • Reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional neoprene.
